Utility to upgrade a Joomla 1.5 template to 1.7

· admin · Dev, PHP · Free online tool, Joomla, Upgrade 1.5 templates

I've made a utility to upgrade a Joomla 1.5 template to make it compatible with 1.7.
Try it out here (no longer online).

I've only tried it out on one template, so be very carfull when you try it: backup your original data or try it out on a local environment before installing it on a production environment.

If you used and liked this utility, consider donating some money so I can enjoy a nice cigar or a fine whisky. I'd appreciate it!

We need to choose an agency to re-design our data centre design association website (http://www.datacentredesign.org). Several agencies have recommended that we have a content management system to include a user account registration, add new pages and to run our new data centre blog. One agency said that they would use "Drupal" and the other "Joomla" to run the site and I was looking on sites that use Drupal or Joomla and blogs to see what other people were saying about using these platforms. As we have no programming skills (beyond using Microsoft Frontpage) I would really appreciate other peoples comments on how easy they found either system to use. Are there any specific advantages? - thanks.

In my experience Joomla is much user friendlier when you don't have any programming skills. Drupal administration is quite powerful but it can be quite daunting. I opted for Wordpress because I only needed "basic" content managment. But I had a look at your site and in my opinion Joomla would be a perfect fit.

Depending on your experience and technical skills I would recommend setting up a joomla using eg. dreamhosts 2 week free trial and play around with it a bit. If it suits your needs you can get in contact with an agency experienced with Joomla templating.
