My first joomla plugin - Facebook like

2010-05-16 · admin · Dev, PHP

My brother is setting up a number of Joomla sites. For one of them he wanted to have a facebook like button. The ones he found only were modules, so for the entire site, not for a specific article. So I investigated how to create a plugin in Joomla and after a few hours of testing, I managed to create one. If you're interested, here it is: Joomla 1.5 Facebook like plugin. It will display a "Like" button below each article or below it's title depending the "position" setting. It is using the iframe version so it easily integrates in any joomla site without additonal setup of fbml/javascript.

Just upload it, enable it and configure it to your wishes.

Hi! I just downloaded your plugin because I need this to my website! I installed it and I have one problem, maybe you can help me?
When I click "like" in 1 second the button unchecks itself, stays like i never clicked before. Do you know this problem?
Hope you can answer, thanks! :)

Hi,

Sorry for my late reply. I've just returned from a holiday. I once experienced this problem as well. It turned out to be a bug on facebook. If you experience this in the future again, it's best to first check the status on facebook.

Here's a quick link: http://bugs.developers.facebook.net/buglist.cgi?product=Social%20Plugins&component=Like%20Button&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED

Kind regards,
Flogiston

Thanks for this plugin mate! It works good, only there is one thing. if you hit the like button, the profile picture of that person will not be shown completely. Only the topof the picture... Any idea's?
Kind regards, Rob

Hi Rob,

I currently don't see any other way then to change the plugin parameter "height" of the plugin in the plugin manager. If you set the height to 70 the profile picture should be visible entirely.
Kind regards,
Flogiston

Thanks for the plug-in. I have a problem. It displays 'like' on all articles. How can I make it display the like button on only some articles?

Thanks again,

Roger

Hi Roger,

Unfortunately that isn't possible yet. I'll have a look at Joomla to see if I can come up with a way to do that...

Kind regards,
Flogiston

Changing the height to '70' did the trick of showing the facebook profile picture correctly. Thanks man! Great plug-in!

Would be perfect with the option to exclude certain articles as mentioned above. When you are able to sort that out, I'd love to use it on my site.

Great an simple plugin. Thanks.
It sure would be great not having the like button on all my info boxes ;)
Any solution on how to decide where it shows up?
